Neck Pain Relief: Is Your Computer Giving You Neck Pain?

March 23rd, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Neck pain is very common as you work at the computer. If you spend long hours staring at the computer screen, you almost certainly suffer from neck pain as well as headaches and digestive upsets.

This is because your poor posture is compressing the muscles and nerves and cutting off blood supply to organs. You’ll find that your neck pain usually comes on after lunch.

What’s the solution?

The solution can be simple. You need to work on both your posture, and you need to relax more. Sit back in your chair, and close your eyes for a moment. Closing your eyes lets you relax, and it’s vital to close your eyes and sit back and relax at least once every half hour as you work at the computer.

Once an hour, you should also get up and walk around. Do a few simple stretches. Using your chair as a balance, twist your head and neck and torso, and stretch to ease out the kinks.

If you find that you’re frequently getting neck pain and headaches, you may want to take some yoga exercises. Yoga helps you to become aware of how you’re using your body, and is a great help for neck pain relief.

If you’ve suspected that the weather influences your migraines, you’re right. It turns out that a day of hot weather can trigger a migraine attack a day later.

BBC NEWS | Health | Hot weather a migraine ‘trigger’:

“Dr Brendan Davies, consultant neurologist and spokesman for the Migraine Trust, said: ‘This adds scientific validity to what we have suspected for some time. Up to 50% of patients believe weather may trigger their migraine.
‘It looks like it is the change in the air temperature, and to a lesser extent the change in air pressure that is important.”

If you’re on prescription medicine for your headaches, carry it with you during hot weather.

Are you looking for natural pain relief? Arthritis can be debilitating. Yoga provides wonderful exercise for arthritis patients. Not only does the gentle stretching of yoga help you to improve your mobility, the exercise provides enhanced blood flow to your joints, and this relieves pain.

The best way to get started is to visit a yoga studio. Many yoga studios provide classes for arthritis patients. In these classes the yoga exercises have been modified for people who suffer with arthritis. You’ll use props and some of the yoga exercises are performed in chairs, this relieves the pressure on your joints.

If you’re not near a yoga studio, you’ll find that books and DVDs are available online which can help you to get started using yoga.

For the first few weeks, concentrate on gentle movements and on your breathing. It’s vital that you don’t try to do too much too soon. If you can’t lie down on the floor without pain, use cushions or perform the exercises sitting in a chair. Any exercise you do will help your arthritis.

Within a very short time you’ll find that you have less pain, and you’re also moving more easily. Another big benefit is that yoga improves your mood. Being in constant pain leads to depression, and you’ll find that yoga relieves this.

Is it possible to be pain-free with yoga? Yes, some arthritis patients manage to become almost pain free, others find that their pain is much reduced. Give yoga a try — you may be surprised at the results you get.
