Arthritis pain relief: can yoga help?

March 7th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Are you looking for natural pain relief? Arthritis can be debilitating. Yoga provides wonderful exercise for arthritis patients. Not only does the gentle stretching of yoga help you to improve your mobility, the exercise provides enhanced blood flow to your joints, and this relieves pain.

The best way to get started is to visit a yoga studio. Many yoga studios provide classes for arthritis patients. In these classes the yoga exercises have been modified for people who suffer with arthritis. You’ll use props and some of the yoga exercises are performed in chairs, this relieves the pressure on your joints.

If you’re not near a yoga studio, you’ll find that books and DVDs are available online which can help you to get started using yoga.

For the first few weeks, concentrate on gentle movements and on your breathing. It’s vital that you don’t try to do too much too soon. If you can’t lie down on the floor without pain, use cushions or perform the exercises sitting in a chair. Any exercise you do will help your arthritis.

Within a very short time you’ll find that you have less pain, and you’re also moving more easily. Another big benefit is that yoga improves your mood. Being in constant pain leads to depression, and you’ll find that yoga relieves this.

Is it possible to be pain-free with yoga? Yes, some arthritis patients manage to become almost pain free, others find that their pain is much reduced. Give yoga a try — you may be surprised at the results you get.

Cure Hives: manage the welts and itching

Got red, itchy welts all over your face and body? Chances are that you have hives.

How do you cure hives?

There are many home remedies.

Try lavender or geranium essential oil — they can reduce the itching, and the welts will disappear after a few days.

There are two main forms of hives, acute urticaria and chronic urticaria. In the acute form of hives, the cause is usually an allergy. In adults, allergic hives are commonly caused by shellfish and nuts. Children may be allergic to shellfish and nuts too, but they can also be allergic to eggs, wheat, and soy.

Although hives clearly have a physical cause — they may even appear if you have a viral infection like the flu — stress can be a factor too.

When you go to your doctor, you’ll usually be offered antihistamines in some form. These may work, in as little as 24 hours, reducing the itching, and gradually your hives will fade. If your doctor feels that you’re suffering from stress, he may offer stress medication too.

Is There a Cure for Hives?

Because hives have so many different causes there’s no sure and certain “cure” which works for everyone. In fact, if you’re a chronic hives sufferer, your hives may be of an unknown origin: this is so in half of the chronic hives sufferers.

Natural hives remedies which you can try include certain essential oils, like lavender and geranium. Pure essential oil of lavender, when a drop or two is applied to the welts neat, will often stop the itching. (Dilute all essential oils with a carrier oil if using them on children.)

If you have a sudden hives flare up, an ice compress will help to relieve the swelling, and deadens the itch.

Homeopathic remedies can help too; these are usually sprayed under the tongue.

Arthritis pain relief: exercise

December 4th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

Exercise can be a huge help with arthritis. Even easy yoga exercises can help, for example.

I do some yoga every day, along with flexibility exercises.

HealthDay reports on the benefits of arthritis:

“Keeps joints from feeling and acting stiff.
Strengthens muscles surrounding the joints.
Improves joint flexibility and alignment.
Reduces joint pain and swelling.
Strengthens bone and cartilage tissue.
Makes you more physically fit overall.”

I’ve found that when I forget to exercise, even for one day, my arthritis is worse. So exercise — every little bit helps.
